Podcasting FAQ
Effective: December 2006

What is Podcasting?
Outside Magazine is excited to announce the launch of its multi-media initiative, which will feature audio interviews and commentary on issues of importance to the outdoor community. Accessible through an Internet connection as streaming and downloadable MP3 files, you can listen directly from your computer or through a MP3-compatible portable media player.

What do I need to listen to the podcasts?
The audio files are streamed using Adobe's Flash application, which is freely available from the following website: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash. If you've previously installed Flash on your computer, you'll need to ensure that you have Flash version 8 or higher.

To begin listening, you need only follow these steps:
From the Podcast Archive Page or from an article page that has a podcast associated with it, click on the "Listen" button located next to a podcast that is of interest to you. The podcast player will automatically launch and the podcast will begin playing.

From the Podcast Player itself, select from amongst the available podcasts listed in the playlist at the bottom of the Player. By clicking on one of the selections in the playlist, or on the "Play" button located to the right of each available selection, you'll launch that selection.

What is RSS?
Don't be put off by the acronym. It's short for "Really Simple Syndication," and it's a really fast, efficient Web tool that lets you collect your favorite Web content in one place. Instead of constantly checking for when our next podcast is posted you'll have regularly updated info right at your fingertips.

How do I access RSS?
First, you'll need an RSS reader. Some readers, like Pluck and Sage, can be installed on your desktop to work with your Web browser. Others, like Newsgator, Bloglines, and Google Reader, are Web-based readers, so you don't have to download anything. Some popular Web portals like My Yahoo! also work as RSS readers.

How do I get RSS feeds?
Just open your RSS reader and add this link to your reader: http://outside.away.com/rss/podcasts.xml

Will RSS cost me anything?
You can sign up for and download most readers without any charge.
